Abstract

This article analyzes the territorial dynamics of small-scale artisanal lobster fishing in Icapuí (CE), focusing on the potential for recognition through Geographical Indication (GI) and the principles of sustainability. The qualitative research was based on semi-structured interviews with fishermen, community leaders, and public managers, as well as participant observation and document analysis. The content analysis, following Bardin (2011), revealed four structuring dimensions of the territory: environmental and ecological; cultural and identity-based; organizational and economic; and governance and public policy. The results indicate that Icapuí's lobster possesses attributes consistent with the criteria required for GI recognition, such as traditional ecological knowledge and territorial productive identity. However, challenges remain regarding institutional articulation, the structuring of the productive chain, and access to public policies. The study concludes that formal GI recognition depends on the construction of collaborative strategies that integrate the valorization of local knowledge, the strengthening of territorial governance, and the promotion of inclusive public policies, contributing to ecosystem conservation and the sustainable development of fishing communities.
