Abstract

Tourism, as a social practice, involves the movement of individuals from their places of origin to other destinations, primarily for recreational and cultural purposes. This activity, which was initially restricted to the European aristocratic elite, has become a mass phenomenon accessible to various social strata, playing a significant role in local economies. In the academic field, tourism is analyzed from various perspectives, with particular emphasis on geographical analysis, which considers space as a central element for studying the phenomenon. In this context, the use of technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has proven crucial in understanding the spatial dynamics of tourism. This article discusses the applications of GIS and VGI in geographical studies on tourism, highlighting how these tools can be used to identify and characterize destinations, as well as to analyze tourist flows. The paper is divided into two main sections: the first addresses digital cartography and the use of geoprocessing, while the second explores the potential of VGI in the collection of spatial data generated by users themselves. Digital cartography and VGI in tourism geography studies offer new ways of collecting and analyzing data, contributing to a better understanding of tourist places and to the management and planning of destinations.
