Intersectionality between gender and media: a semi-discursive Analysis of reports from the National Justice Council News Portal

Abstract

This study critically analyzed the influence of relationships between subjects in news excerpts from the National Justice Council (CNJ) News Portal, highlighting how they reflect and perpetuate social inequalities based on gender. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze the discourse of sources and the understanding of discursive regularities present in the media concerning issues of exclusion related to the spaces assigned to women in society and how this may contribute to the reproduction of gender inequalities in social layers. To this end, we explored the categories of intersectionality, such as ethnicity, social classes, and sexuality, as well as their structural categories, according to Maria Lugones (2014) and Gonzalez (2020). The research adopted a qualitative approach, using document analysis of reports from the CNJ News Portal on the topic, in addition to Brazilian family-centered legislation. This theme aligns with the ideas of Foucault (1996), emphasizing the analysis of source discourse and the understanding of discursive regularities in the media concerning exclusion issues related to spaces of power. Despite its importance, there is a notable research gap that deeply explores the intersection between gender and judicial practices, which this study aims to address. The guiding question is: How are gender inequalities present in the discourse perpetuated by the media, specifically in the communication channel of the National Justice Council News Portal? From the analysis conducted, it was concluded that understanding power dynamics and disproportionate structures requires a critical reflection on the representation of women in the media and the legal system, aiming at the construction of more equitable legislation sensitive to gender issues.
