A Female Dare Devil: Ann Nocenti's Social Criticism and Political Vision in the Mainstream of American Comics

Abstract

This work continues the attention to the female presence in the production of comic books in the mainstream of the American market at the turn of the millennium. This exhibition takes the biography and political positions of the feminist writer and journalist Ann Nocenti as the foundations for the relationship of action and representative construction of women in the History of the media field of comic books. The cultural entertainment industry of comic books presents, in Nocenti's activist and intellectual contribution, dissemination of social and political debates by a female writer in a predominantly male environment. Her narratives reflect her intellectual formations and her political-ideological positions in Communication and Journalism, offering an analytical opportunity consistent with the History of Women. Through the analysis of representations, discourses and performances present in the narratives she produced, the critical-analytical approaches of Gender Studies, Literary Studies, Media History, in addition to the theoretical-methodological fields, are efficient. Political History and Biography/Life History are crossed by the feminine/feminist proposal in the Cultural Industry of comic books.
