The Invisibility of Public Feminicides: The Vivianny Crisley Case in the Media

Abstract

Law No. 13.104/2015 provides for the classification of femicide when there is "contempt or discrimination against the condition of being a woman," but this perspective is often neglected by the authorities. Moreover, journalism rarely questions the absence of this qualifier. This study analyzes the journalistic discourse of g1 Paraíba on the case of Vivianny Crisley, who was murdered in 2016 by three men with whom she had no intimate relationship. Six journalistic articles were analyzed, revealing that the media outlet did not question the lack of femicide classification. g1 PB reproduced the authorities' discourse uncritically, prioritizing a hegemonic "objectivity" that silences the feminist movement and contributes to the underreporting of the case.
