For a Critical and Ancestral Global Health: Ilera, as our mothers and grandmothers did

Since its modern origins, health has been closely linked to processes of bodily control and management, often grounded in projects and policies that have perpetuated conditions of patriarchy, enslavement, colonization, and exclusion. These processes have contributed to shaping a reality that crystallizes exclusions and imposes risks beyond the biological, especially for Black women.
This paper proposes a critical reflection on Global Health by exploring the intersection between traditional care practices and the need for truly inclusive health models. Highlighting the initiative of Ilera, an Afro-Amerindian Health House located in Guaianases, São Paulo, the article underscores the importance of ancestral knowledge in shaping health practices and emphasizes the role of Black women in the transmission of these traditions. By examining how Ilera operates within a peripheral context, the paper advocates for a global health approach that recognizes and integrates local and ancestral practices as essential to public policies for collective care.
