Abstract

We are experiencing a spatiotemporal context in which the uses of the past inscribed in narratives built on monuments have gained problematization in Brazilian sociocultural arenas. Recent demonstrations against statues of controversial characters and constructions in honor to sensitive themes in national history show us the divergences between public histories and popular interests. The debate started in São Paulo about the monument of the bandeirante Borba Gato was appropriated in Goiás, so that the main communication channels and social networks brought the monuments of Goiás in honor of these gures to the arena of public opinion. Among contestations and defenses, it is possible to notice dierent memories about the past of Goiás and those identied as regional heroes. In this sense, this article is originated from this problematic of the political expressions of memory in Goiás, aiming to identify the disputes around the state’s past inserted in the monuments in honor to the bandeirantes located in Goiânia.
