Abstract

The intolerance toward Jews is a phenomenon as old as Judaism itself, although antisemitism has undergone significant reconfigurations over the centuries. In the 20th century, it transitioned from religious hatred to ethnic hatred, despite the extensive debate over whether Jews constitute an ethnicity. Through a combination of theoretical discussion on historical antisemitism and the contemporary political landscape in Brazil, the aim of this article is to present some ways in which antisemitism manifests in the current national political and social context, as well as to question some of the reasons why part of the Jewish community supported a politician with a history of antisemitism. To achieve this, the paper proposes classifying Brazilian antisemitism as "veiled", as it is not as explicit and overt as versions seen in other times and places. This, coupled with factors such as Jair Bolsonaro's support for Israel and the association of the left with Palestine, was sufficient for this segment of the Brazilian Jewish community to ignore Bolsonaro’s antisemitism.
