Abstract

The article presents the long paths and deviations that the printed ones took until arriving in Pernambuco. It also presents the dynamics of the book market in Metrópole and Colônia, more specifically, in Pernambuco. In general, printed matter went through a long process of censorship and inspection imposed by the royal government to avoid criticism of the monarchy, religion and customs. Many presses that arrived in Pernambuco, even those that were not prohibited, entered through the contraband routes. The dynamics of the circulation of books and reading done in Pernambuco at the beginning of the XIX helps to understand the processes that culminated in the Revolution of 1817.
