This article examines the representations of the nation in speeches of Hugo Chavez throughout his terms as president of Venezuela, since 1999 to 2012. We have aimed to determine, during the period, in which way the national question was represented by Chávez in different contexts of his government. We have noticed that the chavista nationalist discourse focuses on a redefinition of popular sovereignty based on the one hand, a kind of redemption of the proposed Simon Bolivar and artisans of Latin American independence, while that build new mechanisms of inclusion and popular participation. The Chavista discourse aimed also to recruit supporters amid the tense political disputes, transform reality and legitimize the strengthening of the role of the state during his governments.Downloads
