This paper aims at presenting some of the contributions that the honoured professor Maria de Fátima Fonseca Guilherme has offered to Applied Linguistics. In order to do so, while carrying out a discussion that is relevant to me – teaching and learning process at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology and the place occupied by Grammar in this process – I apply notions from two thinkers who have been crucial for Maria de Fatima´s academical path: Michel Pêcheux and Mikhail Bakhtin.
