RELATIONS OF KNOWLEDGE, POWER AND SUBJECTIVATION IN POSE

Abstract

The series “Pose” depicts the conflicts of LGBTQI characters in the historical context of late-80’s America. Throughout the plot, one may notice the functioning of multiple domains of knowledge and correlated relations of power, which contribute to the characters’ discursive formation. Thus, we aim to analyze the relations of power and of knowledge functioning as the subjectivation of the three main characters of the said audiovisual production. For such purpose, we opt to make use of the theoretical and methodological tools of the Foucauldian discourse analysis, more notably, the concepts of knowledge, power, and subjectivation. After the discourse analysis of the first episode, we come to note that the domains of medical and religious knowledge, as well as the relations of power exercised by the family, come through significantly in the characters’ subjectivations.
