Abstract

This work aims to analyse the Cooperative Principle in court hearings in order to point out the fulfilment or the violation of Grice’s conversational maxims (1975) in the speech of women who suffered domestic violence. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the concepts of Conversation Analysis and Pragmatics articulated to the principles of Forensic Linguistics, and the corpus is composed of audio recordings of two court hearings which were transcribed according to Preti (2003). In accordance with the findings, the victims violated at least one or two of the four conversational maxims, however, in most cases, they were very cooperative in the interaction.
