"Glorious military police Paraná": Masculinity and institutional identity (XX century)

The study of the construction of the identity of a police institution, organized by hierarchy and discipline, is an important step towards the understanding of historical constructions of gender and the Brazilian historiography. An institution that represents the state and its armed power is construction of gender identities, which are legitimized by the power and tradition. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze the construction of the identity of the Military Police of Paraná State, throughout the twentieth century, which is a defining ideal of masculinity. An ideal that guides the construction of subjective identities and practices of social agents. To guide the reflection highlight the theoretical contributions of P. Bourdieu, J. Scott and R. Connell. It is worth noting that the sources used in this article are institutional documents, including celebratory speeches and laws.
