The article discusses the advance of neoliberalism in Brazil and the deepening of the dismantling of public universities through educational policies in the framework of the years 2016 to 2022. The objective is to understand the counter-reforms that have been undermining education and public universities and, what are the impacts of these policies for teacher training in geography; highlighting the initial training and the supervised internship in geography in this context. And, starting from the objective and concrete reality of teacher training in the face of the challenges of the policies put in place, this article is the result of a qualitative research, based both on documentary research (public policies in the sources of the public collection on the official pages searched on the internet) and literature on the topic. Harvey (2005); Antunes (2018) and Saviani (2012) support the understanding of neoliberalism, Saviani (2012); Dutra and Brisolla (2020); Mendonça and Fialho (2020); Pires and Cardoso (2020) address the discussions on public education in the face of neoliberal counter-reforms and Faleiros (2022) and Barreto (2015) bring the challenges of geography teacher training in this scenario, in addition to the documents consulted. The results point to the most direct impacts of these counter-reforms for the degree courses and, especially those in the great area of human sciences, among which the degree course in geography is part.
