Abstract

This article seeks to present the New Rhetoric as a theory of rhetorical audiences and to bring it closer to Bakhtin/Volochinov's conception of the interlocutor's role in enunciation. This comparative approach between both theories allows us to analyze the parliamentary rhetoric of senator Eliziane Gama (Cidadania-MA) on the voting day of the final report to the CPI. This discourse builds its audience according to very specific argumentative intentions, taking as an object of agreement either the universal real or the particular preferable. From the analysis of these objects of agreement, it is possible to observe the functioning of argumentation as a producer of actions, rather than as a producer of merely intellectual effects. Finally, these results allow us to conclude on the proximity between the theories of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca and Bakhtin/Volochinov as dialogic and social approaches to the functioning of language and, mainly, to highlight the role of female rhetoric (of the voice, as Senator Eliziane said) for the process of transforming social reality.
