ON THE TRACKS OF MADNESS

MEMORY OF PSYCHIATRY IN THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO (1850-1950)

Abstract

This article presents fragments of the dissertation of my authorship and the transcription of the third meeting of the 60 years of History of madness Seminar, by Michel Foucault. The study contextualized mental health care actions with circumscribed time frame in the period from 1850 to 1950; explored a fraction of the medical-scientific discourse in Brazil. The narratives are divided into three sections: the first presents the actions mental health assistance in the province of São Paulo; the second focused on the synthesis of Osório César’s production at the Juquery Asylum for the insane; the last section describes the teaching and learning process of the School Pavilion. The sources were analyzed based on Foucault's thinking (2008, 2013, 2019). The study sought to recover the memory of psychiatry in São Paulo, which is led by the methodological concepts of the field of Cultural History.
