Analyzing literary texts written in a foreign language based on the theoretical framework developed by Bakhtin in his theory of the novel offers some challenges to the analyst, among which is the fact that concepts discussed in works that specifically focus on the novelistic genre are also present in other works of Bakhtin and other members of the Circle. Therefore, this paper aimed to systematize some of these concepts, emphasizing the specificities of the literary text and the process of co-creation by the reader/analyst. Despite the fact that this article aims at a theoretical systematization, it sought to show, through a preliminary analysis of Randall Kenan’s novel titled A visitation of Spirits, the implications of adopting this approach to the analysis of foreign literary works.
