Abstract

Through the analysis of the book O Ateneu (1888), by Raul Pompéia, and through the identification of narrative passages that demonstrate relations of power that cover topics as gender and sexuality, we aim to observe perpetuation of values in the society of the time, and utilizing theoretical contribution from the field of education to reflect on the role of school in this dynamic. Understanding school as an environment of social control, we can observe the hierarchical ties present in the Brazilian society through the book, denouncing patterns that remain similar until the present day.
