ETHOS AND VOICE IN A DEATH METAL SONG

REPRESENTATION OF THE CONFRONTATION WITH CHRISTIANITY

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the discursive functioning of the musical genre death metal, especially the mode of enunciation that characterizes it. Considering that death metal songs produce scenographies that present themes such as violence and satanism, we start with the hypothesis that the voice used in these productions, because of its distorted and animalized aspect, is one of the elements which contribute to the constitution of an ethos legitimate, as it were, to the discourse. The theoretical perspective of this work is Discourse Analysis and we specifically consider the propositions of Dominique Maingueneau about the concepts of ethos and global semantics. Establishing relations between the ethos peculiar to death metal and the process of stereotyping of the Devil throughout history, we will analyze the song Homage for Satan, by Deicide.
