Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the statements made by the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, and by the National Secretary of Youth, Bruno Julio, about the rebellion occurred between criminal factions which resulted in a massacre of about 60 men, on 1 January 2017, in the state of Amazonas, more precisely in the capital, Manaus. The data were collected through the online newspaper (g1.globo.com), in the Political section. The articles were published in January 2017. In order to guide the analysis of the statements of these authorities, we will use the Critical Analysis propagated by Fairclough (2003a), aiming at unveiling the ideological issues and hegemonic forces which prevail in the text. In the analysis of linguistic materiality, we will use Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), by Halliday (2004), because we consider relevant the speakers’ linguistic choices. We will also use Critic Realism philosophy by Bhaskar (1989), to unveil the structures, mechanisms and events. The preliminary analyses reveal that the statements of the president and the secretary carry high ideological content.
