Abstract

This paper discusses the representations about war in literary discourse through the analysis of A Retirada da Laguna, by Visconde de Taunay and Os Sertões, by Euclides da Cunha. For this we use the notions of sociodiscursive imaginaries, modes of discourse organization and communication contract, from the Semiolinguistics by Charaudeau ([2004], 2013, 2006, 1992). To discuss the imaginary of the war and its relation to literary discourse we use the work of Jomini (1949), Clauzewitz (2010) and Dumézil (1973). We observe that in the literary discourse, until the twentieth century, there is a paradigm, given by sociodiscursive imaginaries, according to which war is a heroic event necessary for the maintenance of the political sovereignty and prosperity of a nation.
