Abstract

The religious discourse occupies a privileged space in the contemporary society, acting directly on its faithful people’s thinking, feeling and acting. Given to this importance, many churches and religious strongly gamble on the speech and argumentation as a way of convincement and spreading the values of the church, portraying those as unique and true. Thus, there is the use of what Brandão (1994) and Maingueneau (2007) define as a polemic speech. In this work, we aim to reflect on the way the polemic speech is used by the religious discourse, having as a start point the analysis of an interview given by Pastor Silas Malafaia to the TV program De frente com Gabi. We are looking forward to interpreting how the ethos built by the pastor in the interview can influence on the dissemination of the church’s ideas represented by Malafaia.
