LANDSCAPE, MEMORY AND SOCIAL REPRESENTATION:

interpretation of narratives about the “diluvium” of the year 1795 in Cananeia (SP, Brazil).

Abstract

The municipality of Cananeia, located on the south coast of the state of São Paulo, includes the island, where the city is located, seat of the municipality and another part called Cananeia continent, with mountains and hills covered by the Atlantic forest, in addition to the plain with mangroves. and restingas. At the time studied, the rural area of ​​Cananeia had farms with different crops, using enslaved labor. In March 1795, a mass movement geomorphological event occurred, due to the intense rains in the summer, causing material damage, which was recorded in the city's memoir. Thus, the main objective of the article was to analyze and interpret the event described in this book and other written and oral sources, associating collective memories and other social representations. As a result of the interpretative analyzes, the memory of the 1795 event is present today because it was a remarkable event, involving stories and symbologies of the waters, lived by the belonging collectivity and inherited by table as Pollak (1992) says. In this way, the study contributes to the understanding of the landscape as a heritage, whose memories are part of the lived geographical spaces.
